The Green River Collective’s mission is to educate Shambhala Music Festival attendees about the Salmo River Ranch’s natural ecosystem and inspire them to reduce their impact on it.
We raise awareness around sustainable practices to protect the river, forest, farm, and skies across the 500-acre Ranch, while actively working to clean up litter and contaminants.
1. Do not use soap, shampoo, sunscreen, and/or any other body products in the river.
At scale, even biodegradable products pollute the water and harm aquatic life. Use the showers for your hygiene routine and wash off body products near vegetation before swimming off. Soil and plant roots can help filter any contaminants.
2. Properly dispose of cigarette butts.
Extinguish your cigarette and cannabis butts using our Pocket Ashtray! You can get your Pocket Ashtray from us by donation at our GRC booth (at Muscle Beach), or the info booth downtown. Cigarette butt filters and cannabis roaches leach toxic chemicals into the water and are often ingested by wildlife who mistake them for food. This is very harmful to both habitat and animal.
3. Use the designated outhouses.
Urine and feces can contaminate the water and have negative impacts on both the ecosystem and downstream users.
4. Drive slowly on the dirt road leading to the festival.
Dust clouds generated by fast driving can travel and settle on the river, affecting water quality and harming aquatic life.
5. Leave no trace.
Take all your belongings with you when you leave, and pick up any litter or garbage you come across, even if it wasn’t yours.
6. Tell a friend.
It takes one person in a crowd to say “Hey, that’s not right” to make the world a better place. The birds, the fishes and even the bugs under the rocks will thank you. Happy Shambhala.
